Why won’t my MP3 audio book download to itunes?

fizzysmile asked:
Ok, I’ve got an audio book that is in MP3 format on 1 disc. My understanding is that I should be able to download this into my iTunes so I can listen to it via the iPod rather than having to listen to the disc.(Otherwise I am limited to listening in my car or on my laptop.) iTunes will not even recognize it when I load it into my disc drive on my laptop but I CAN play it on my laptop so the drive is able to read it. This disc that I have is the same version/recording that I could have purchased and downloaded through iTunes so I’m lost here. I purchased it regular retail in a case on a disc because I have family and friends who swap audio books.

I’ve updated iTunes, updated my Windows (I do not have a Mac) and now I’m at a loss. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance!
